History

Dawes County was created in 1885 and named for Governor James W. Dawes. The region was long home to Native American tribes, including the Lakota Sioux, before European-American settlement. Chadron developed as a railroad hub and later became home to Chadron State College, founded in 1911. The Dawes County Historical Museum preserves pioneer artifacts, Native American history, and stories of the 1893 Chadron‑to‑Chicago “1000 Mile Horse Race.”
