Crawford is a city in Dawes County, Nebraska, United States, in the Great Plains region.

Crawford is a full-service community with restaurants , motels, service stations, antique stores , pharmacy, health clinic, free museum, churches , dentists, nursing home, K-12 school , library, 9 hole golf course , swimming pool, baseball fields , city parks, rodeo grounds , bank/ATM, insurance agencies , camping supplies , realtor, railroad, post office , newspaper, plumbers , electricians , laundromat, and hairdressers.

Crawford is the site of the Prehistoric Prairie Discovery Center.

Crawford hosts the High School Rodeo in late May, July 4th parade, Cass 1 Chili Cook off, PRCA Rodeo and professional art show, the Pea body Hale Fiddle Contest the last weekend in July, Annual Gun Show, and the Annual Northwest Nebraska Rock Club Swap over Labor Day weekend.

Be sure to bring your camera and visit picturesque Toadstool Geological Park north of Crawford.

Be alert to fossils.

Just west of Toadstool Park is the Hudson-Meng Bison Kill Site where more than 700 bison mysteriously died 10,000 years ago.

The site is open from mid May through September.

High Plains Homestead is quietly becoming an “Old West Cow town” where you can visit the Dirty Creek Saloon, Badlands, Mercantile, mail a card in the High Plains P.O. and see a working Blacksmith Shop.

Take Hwy. 2 North of Crawford and follow the signs for both of the previous listings.

For an interesting side trip , take Highways 2 and 71 south eight miles to the town of Belmont where Nebraska’s only Railroad tunnel is located.

You can keep going south and visit Box Butte Reservoir east of Mars land.
Go back to Crawford and follow Highway 20 west to play golf at the Legend Butte’s Golf Course, voted one of the top 10 courses in Nebraska.

Three miles west of Crawford is historical Fort Robinson State Park, a place you won’t want to miss.

The historical museum has exhibits depicting life as it was from 1874 to 1948, including an authenticity refurnished 1908 veterinary hospital and the reconstructed guard house where Chief Crazy Horse was killed.

Trailside Museum offers a look at Pine Ridge country’s prehistoric past and exhibits one of the largest elephants ever unearthed.

Camping, hiking and horseback riding are available as well as indoor accommodations in many of the fort’s original buildings.

Soldier Creek Wilderness Area, adjacent to the fort , also offers hiking, biking and horseback riding.

Trout fishing, jeep rides to the top of the Cheyenne Butte and nighttime entertainment at the Post Playhouse add to the allure of the area.
