History

Cedar County was organized in 1857, named for the cedar trees that once lined its hills and riverbanks. Indigenous peoples including the Ponca, Omaha, and Sioux lived and hunted here long before European settlement. Lewis and Clark passed through in 1804, and permanent settlement followed the Kansas‑Nebraska Act of 1854. The county seat shifted from Old St. James to St. Helena before finally moving to Hartington in 1885, chosen for its central location. The railroad spurred growth, and Hartington developed into a thriving agricultural and trading center. Today, historic buildings, churches, and museums preserve the county’s pioneer and immigrant heritage.
