Laurel was founded in 1893 and was originally named Claremont Junction. The present name is after Laura Martin, the daughter of one of the city’s founders.
On the outskirts of town, on the east side of Highway 20, you will come upon a monument and flag, dedicated to the 17 men who lost their lives on August 5, 1944, when two B-17 bombers collided above the town. Learn more about this here.
Also at Laurel, visit both beautiful parks.
The City Park has electrical and water hookups and waste station – all free.
The Lions Club Park has camper hookups in addition to the tennis court and pool.
There are very few old fashioned soda fountains that exist but Laurel has one at “Main Street Apothecary”.
Also enjoy the lush nine-hole golf course, Cedar View Country Club, where golf pro Mark Calcavecchia first practiced his sport in his home town of Laurel.
Several events worth noting occur during the year.
The community celebration called “Ag Days” is held the last part of June.
