The city is Nebraska’s “Cupid Capital” as each year thousands of Valentine greeting cards bearing special cachets are mailed across the nation and to foreign countries on February 14. East of the Valentine city park, you will find a 700 acre state fish hatchery.
Stop at Centennial Hall, located at 3rd and Macomb. A National Historical Landmark, built in 1897, the hall is Nebraska’s oldest standing high school.
It features Queen Anne-Romanesque architecture and serves as a heritage museum of outstanding personal collections which are beautifully displayed. It is open Thursday, Friday and Saturday, Memorial weekend through Labor Day, 1 p.m . to 5 p.m . or by appointment.
You can also visit the Sand Hills Museum, a collection of antique autos , guns, Indian artifacts, musical instruments an d other unusual antiques , which is open daily
Memorial Day through Labor Day, as well as the Cherry County Historical Museum.

There ‘s Fort Niobrara National Wildlife Refuge located northeast of Valentine on Highway 12 along the Niobrara River. In 1890, Fort Niobrara was established to provide military protection to the settlers in the region.
Although there was no Indian trouble in the immediate area, the post remained active until 1906. In 1912, a portion of the original Fort Niobrara was set aside as a national game preserve.
Its impressive visitors’ center features excellent wild life and natural history displays.
Nearby, sizeable herds of buffalo, elk, and Texas longhorn cattle can be observed.
The newly designated scenic river, the Niobrara River, known as Nebraska’s swiftest river, is also considered its finest canoeing water.
The 25 mile river segment from Fort Niobrara Wildlife Refuge is the most popular area with canoeists.
Several falls and cascades include Smith Falls, a newly designated state park that is truly picturesque.
Canoeing and Tubing Outfitters, who are equipped to provide full services ranging from simple canoe rentals all the way through guided catered tours, are available.
You might prefer to golf at Deer Park Golf Club and Restaurant, a scenic nine-hole golf course overlooking the Minnecheduza Creek and located three miles east on
Highway 12, across from Fort Niobrara Refuge
Open to the public.
Another interesting side trip would be to Valentine Migratory Waterfowl Refuge south of Valentine on U.S. 83.
Have your camera ready because there will be ample opportunity to get shots of a variety of San d Hills waterfowl.
Lakes located on refuge property offer the angler the challenge of a lifetime.
Picnicking facilities are provided as well .
Big Alkali Lake is home of the big northern.
Alkali Fish Camp has cabins, free camping and boat rentals.
Merritt Reservoir south of Valentine has almost 3,000 acres of water to provide a recreational area which offers camping an near Sparks, Nebraska. Graham Canoe Outfitters offers canoes, kayaks, 1-2 and 3 person tubes, 1 to 8 hour trips , or 2-day full service trips .
We provide tents and 3 meals, shuttle service and camping.
Brewers Canoe s & Tubes offers canoes, kayak and a 16-man canoe, with trips of 2 to 8 hours or a load in the “voyageur “.
Fishberry RV Park & Campground is located 5 miles north of Valentine on US Hwy.83.
It offers pull thru w] full hookups on 17 acres of a working ranch in a rural serene setting.
Just 4 miles to the Rosebud Casino.
Tent sites and horse accommodations are available.
Highway 20 from Valentine past Harrison has been designated an official Nebraska Byway.
