O’Neill sits at the intersection of 3 major highways, 20, 281, and  275.

Historical facts are located  on a marker at the Holt County courthouse , which was built in 1935.

The Kinkaid Building, a nation al historical site and home of the Holt County Historical Society, was named in honor of Senator Moses  P. Kinkaid who introduced the “Kinkaid Act” which greatly increased  the amount of land available to the homesteaders in the early 1900s.

The “Cowboy Trail”, the nation’s longest rail to trail conversion and Nebraska ‘s first state recreational trail passes through O’Neill. This hiking, biking and equestrian trail will stretch 321 miles across Nebraska.

 

O’Neill is home of nearly 4,000 friendly people and over 30 businesses that are able to meet the needs of anyone traveling by offering a choice.

O'Neill History

O’Neill was founded by General John O’Neill as an Irish colony.

Things to Do

The “Cowboy Trail”, the nation’s longest rail to trail conversion and Nebraska ‘s first state recreational trail passes through O’Neill. This hiking, biking and equestrian trail will stretch 321 miles across Nebraska.

The only Railroad Depot still in existence along the 321 miles is located in O’Neill and has been restored to its  original condition.

Hunting is a major pastime in the fall and winter with an abundance of geese, deer, pheasants, grouse, rabbits and prairie chickens .

The fisherman can find many well-stocked county farm ponds for fishing, and there is the Niobrara River 25 miles north on Highway 281.

O’Neill is the Legislative designated “Irish Capital” and hosts an annual community celebration honoring St. Patrick’s Day each year. People come from all over to enjoy the festivities .

O’Neill holds a family “Summerfest” a Family celebration the second week-end in July, which includes a rodeo, car show, cruise night , sidewalk day and many more family activities.

O’Neill has a park system that has an Olympic-sized pool, tennis and horseshoe courts , baseball, softball and soccer fields , a rodeo arena, all that accommodate area and state tournaments.
