Plainview

Population in 2012: 1,222 (0% urban, 100% rural).

A farming community, Plainview’s ancestry is predominately Danish and German.

Some came as early as 1873 by way of Wisconsin and Illinois.

Plainview is the home of the well-known Klown Band which has served as goodwill ambassador across the state, for over 50 years, including the annual Nebraska State Fair.

Chilvers Park, on Highway 20, features play equipment, lighted tennis court, swimming pool, two shelter houses and picnic facilities, rest rooms, and camper pads with RV hookups free to overnight tourists.

Band Shell Park has play equipment and sand volleyball court.

A bowling alley is available.

Come see Big Sky Gypsy for log home sales, retail home décor and a selection of gift items.

The residents invite everyone to visit the Historical Museum in the old Chicago-Northwestern Depot. The museum is open May 1 to September 30 each Saturday and Sunday from 1:00 to 5:00 pm. Tours are available any other time of the year and/or week by calling 402 582-4503.

Step back in time at The Johnson Hotel, circa 190. The hotel was built in 1901 by Gottleib Krause as a saloon with a “hotel” upstairs. He later added on and made use of those fancy electric lights. Fred Astaire’s grandfather owned the hotel in the early years, and Fred and Astele would play on the second floor porch. A full service restaurant is now in the original clothing store, relax and enjoy and dine amidst antiques and curiosities.

Plainview Country Club (4 miles west, 1 north, then east) has a beautiful nine-hole golf course, available to visitors for green fees, with cart rental available. Also, there are picnic facilities, play equipment, club house, fishing, (with member), RV pads and hookups – inquire at Tenth Hole (south side)

The annual Klown Festival with a home-town Klown Karnival, barbecue, fireworks and other fun stuff, mostly free, is on the first Saturday of June with some activity the previous Friday evening.
