History

Cuming County was established in 1855 and named after Thomas B. Cuming, acting governor of Nebraska Territory. Early “paper towns” such as Catherine and Manhattan briefly served as county seats before West Point was chosen in 1858. The fertile Elkhorn River Valley attracted settlers, many of them German and Czech immigrants, who built farms, churches, and schools. By the 1870s, West Point had become a thriving trade center, and the county’s agricultural base grew rapidly. Today, Cuming County is known for its strong farming traditions and well‑preserved pioneer heritage.
