History
Cherry County was established in 1883 and named after Lt. Samuel A. Cherry, an Army officer stationed at Fort Niobrara. The land was long home to Native American tribes including the Lakota and Pawnee. With the arrival of settlers and the railroad, Valentine developed as the county seat and remains the cultural and economic hub. Ranching quickly became the backbone of the economy, and the county is still one of the nation’s leading beef producers. Historic sites, museums, and rodeos preserve the stories of pioneers, Native peoples, and ranching traditions.
