Royal Nebraska

North of Royal is Grove Lake State Trout Rearing Station, Grove Lake Bait Shop, Antelope County Resource Center and Grove Lake Wildlife Area.

There is primitive camping, picnicking, and fishing.

Located between Royal and Orchard, near the Knox County border, is the Ashfall Fossil Beds State Historical Park, opened in the summer of 1991.

It may be reached by driving three miles north of Royal, two miles west and three miles north, or take Highway 20 two west of Royal and six miles north.

The visitor orientation center houses exhibits about prehistoric times in Northeast Nebraska, and the rhino barn covers the area of new excavations where you can watch paleontologists uncover skeletons that have been undisturbed for 10,000,000 years.

The park is open Memorial weekend to Labor Day.

Hours in May and Sept are 10 am to 4 pm, Wednesday through Saturday, and 1 pm to 4 pm on Sunday.

During the other months, hours are 9 am to 5 pm, Monday through Saturday and 11 am to 5 pm on Sunday.

On the way out to Ashfall, you will come to a red barn with Green Gables where you can dine and browse.

At the Grove Lake Bait Shop there are many large and small chain saw wood carvings done by a local artist.
